Over the last few weeks, several of our contracts have involved
rebedding loose Bonnet Tiles that covered the "Hips" of a roof
If you want to catch up on what Mayfield Roofing have been up to lately

It never ceases to annoy me to see so many roofs with the problem
of loose, hip and ridge tiles, particularly on recently built properties.
So many modern houses, costing hundreds of thousands, are flawed for
the sake of one extra bag of cement, that costs less than a fiver!
Here is one example:
Don't those hip Bonnet tiles look miserable?
The cement is all loose; many Bonnets have been dislodged and
there may also be leakage into the structure. Any leakage will be
causing damage, even though it may not always be apparent
inside the building.
Here is a side view of the same hip:
So, What is the answer?
The old Bonnet Tiles must be lifted off, cleaned of old mortar and
set to one side for reuse.
The hip section must then be rebuilt in the correct manner
Each Bonnet Tile has to be bedded in new mortar and
Each Bonnet is then mechanically fixed with a galvanised nail,The next Bonnet is then positioned properly, bedded correctly
with adequate mortar, a bit like laying bricks to build a wall
Proceed then, laying each Bonnet in turn
When the run is finished, go back over the entire ridge
and face up the cement to leave a neat tidy finish

what it looked like before we started

Hip; Hip; Hooray - Are Your Ridge Tiles Happy?
On a lighter note;
Are you old enough to remember those tedious school quiz shows on TV?
"Top Of The Form" is one that comes to my mind where each team had
to praise their opponents with mantras like "Hip; Hip Hooray"
In my last year at school, I was actually picked to represent my school
in one of these fiascos!
Luckily, there was a series of Power Cuts (Outages) when
'My Show' was broadcast, so hardly anyone saw it
and I am spared the ridicule on YouTube!
